The Civil War in Alabama

Alabama 12th Cavalry Regiment

HISTORICAL NOTES:

    The Alabama 12th Cavalry Regiment was organized at Montgomery, 4 June 1861, with men recruited from Calhoun, De Kalb, Jefferson, Saint Clair, Shelby, and Talladega counties. It went to Virginia a month later. When it arrived at Winchester, it was brigaded under General Edmund Kirby Smith with the 9th and 11th Alabama, 19th Mississippi, and 38th Virginia regiments.

OFFICERS:

    Col. Warren Stone Reese (Montgomery); Lt. Cols. William H. Hundley; Marcellus Pointer (MS; wounded); Majors Albert Gallatin Bennett (resigned, 5 Jan 1863); Augustus John Ingram (Blount; accidentally disabled); and Adjutant R. B. Whorton (resigned, 11 Oct 1862).

    The companies were from Jefferson (two), Captains Musgrove, killed at Fayetteville; and W. A. White. From St. Clair, Capt. A. D. Bennett. Jackson, Capt. Wharton. Blount, Capt. Donaldson, resigned, Capt. Weaver, killed at Bentonville. Calhoun, Capt. Scurry. Madison, Capt. Shepherd. Cherokee, Capt. Wm. Lokey, resigned; James Maxwell. State of Georgia, Capt. McKinney. State of' Tennessee, Capt. Saunders; company detached.
