Alabama 23rd Sharpshooters Battalion

HISTORICAL NOTES:

    The Alabama 23rd Battalion Sharpshooters was organized in November, 1863, at Charleston, Tennessee. Its members were from Companies E, F, and G, of the 1st Battalion, Hilliard's Alabama Legion. It fought at Drewry's Bluff , and later was active in the Petersburg siege north of the James River and around Appomattox . Many were disabled at Sayler's Creek and only 4 officers and 43 men surrendered in April, 1865.

ASSIGNMENTS:

    The unit was assigned to General Gracie's and Moody's Brigade, served with Longstreet in East Tennessee, then moved to Virginia.
