This is their story, the history of the Tennessee 31st / 39th Mounted Infantry Regiment. They were from the western slopes of the Appalachians, rugged men, simple men, who valued their freedom and independence and when that was threatened they fought for Dixie like no others. They suffered greatly at Vicksburg, and in the final days of the war fought in their own hometowns against Sheridan and his men as he plundered the Appalachians.

Their story has lain hidden and largely forgotton for 150 years, but now authors Glenn Stacy and John Rigdon have corroborated to tell their story, a story of heroism, a story of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds and illness, a story of privations throughout their service, but a story that deserves to take its place alongside the other immortal heroes of the confederacy.
