Georgia Consolidated Census Index

This index contains 468,227 names from the years 1820 - 1880. This represents approx. 10% of the people who lived in Georgia during this timeframe.

Distribution of the records by county and year

The census for 1890 was lost - some 5.5 million names, and the population numbers for the years 1890 - 1920 represent 15 million names. My index is more heavily weighted towards the earlier years and contains a statistically negligible number of names from the later (1890 - 1920) years.

The aggregate number of people who lived in GA prior to 1880 (inclusive) was 5 million. Using this number as a basis, my CD contains approx. 10% of the names. One of the reasons for this is that the census prior to 1850 contains only the names of the head of households. For 1830 for instance, the Census Bureau, puts the total population of GA at 1 million, but the heads of households were only 250,000. Those other 750,000 million people's names can only be derived from other records. Another reason is that I have purged duplicate records. If there are 25 John Smiths in the same county in the same census year, the name only appears once.

Bottom line, as Mark Twain once said, "There's lies, damn lies and statistics." My index contains 400,000 names (or so) across all years from 1820 - 1890 with a cross section of the entire state and all years represented.
