Rivers Account of the Raising of the Troops

by Col. William J. Rivers

When the war began, South Carolina was loosely organized under Militia Units. Col. Rivers was charged with organizing the troops state wide and enlisting them into Confederate service.

This book details his work on a regiment by regiment basis, showing the counties where each was formed, the officers names and brief notes on their numbers and disposition. It was compiled by Col. Rivers as he worked and the original unpublished manuscript is now located in the South Carolina Historical Society. To my knowledge most of this information has not been generally known to researchers previously.
