This battalion was also known as Meyer's Battalion, the 15th Confederate Cavalry, and the FL 2nd Infantry, Second Organization.
The Florida 3rd Cavalry Battalion was assembled at Pensacola, Florida in March 1862 with two companies and later increased to five. The unit served in Florida attached to the Department of the Gulf until the late summer of 1863 when it merged into the 15th Confederate Cavalry Regiment. Major Thomas J. Meyers was in command.
The 15th Confederate Cavalry, which was organized in September, 1863 at Mobile by consolidating Murphy's Battalion of AL Cavalry, the 3rd Battalion of FL Cavalry, Captains Arrington's and Barlow's Companies of AL Cavalry, and Captain Smith's Company of FL Cavalry. These companies had picketed the coast for two or three years.
The 15th Confederate Cavalry remained in the vicinity of Mobile till the fall, when it moved into Louisiana, and was engaged in a brilliant affair at Tunica Bayou.
Later the unit was involved in the battle of Blakeley. They disbanded shortly after the battle except two or three companies, which were paroled at Demopolis.
