Augusta Fire Brigade Infantry Battalion Reserves



 


HISTORICAL NOTES:

    This company was made up of men who worked for the Rigdon & Ansley Company in Augusta during the war. It was also known as the Rigdon Guards. They were called out for the battle of Griswoldville, GA and arrived on the train after the battle began. Two men of the unit were battalion in the battle. At the Battle of Aiken the men were deployed along Horse Creek as the last line of defense ahead of the boys of the Georgia Military Institute who set up their cannon behind the wall at Magnolia cemetery and across the river from the mouth of the creek.

    - my great great grandfather. William was 14 when the war began. His father, Thomas Sylvester Rigdon served in the GA 49th Infantry Regiment and died in Virginia.
