Translation of
Where There Is No Dentist
By Murray Dickson, DDS.
From English
Into Haitian Creole

About the Project

There are 7 steps involved in the translation of Where There Is No Dentist. We need volunteers to help at all of the steps. Currently we are working on the earliest pieces.

STEP 1. - English PDF format - The current book in English was written in 1981. Hesperian Foundation does not have the book in electronic format, but it is available in PDF (scanned image) format. This will be used to create an English text document.

STEP 2. - Graphics in JPG format - The PDF file will be used to extract the graphics and each graphic saved as a jpg file.

STEP 3. - Creole Translation - The English version has approximately 55,000 words. This step involves translating the book text and the graphics "bubbles" into Creole.

STEP 4. - Grammar and Orthography - Experts and professional translators will check the translation for correct grammar and Orthography.

STEP 5. - Field Testing - The manuscript will be used in actual clinical situations in Haiti and in Clinics in the U.S. and Dominican Republic, etc. where there are Haitian speakers.

STEP 6. - Final Creole Typeset - The book manuscript will be "typeset" in Pagemaker with the graphics and prepared for printing.

STEP 7 - The book will be published and made available. We plan to have the final book available in the fall of 2006.
