The
Civil War in Louisiana |
HISTORICAL NOTES:
The men of the five-company cavalry battalion were recruited in the parishes of East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, and St. Tammany. It skirmished in Louisiana attached to the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, then was assigned to Ross' and Scott's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The battalion engaged the Federals in Mississippi and Louisiana and disbanded in the spring of 1865. Major James T. Coleman was in command. Members of the seven-company infantry battalion were raised in Livingstone, Orleans, and Tangipahoa parishes. It was assigned to Maxey's and Buford's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and captured at Port Hudson in July, 1863. After being exchanged the battalion was not reorganized. However, many of the men transferred to other Louisiana units.
