The Civil War in Mississippi

4th Cavalry Regiment

     

  • HISTORICAL NOTES:

      The Fourth Mississippi Cavalry was organized in late 1862 by the consolidation of two previously formed Mississippi Cavalry Battalions. These units were Hughes' Mississippi Cavalry Battalion and Stockdale's Mississippi Cavalry Battalion. Both of these units would reappear individually later in the War, but in both cases they were second organizations formed by the same commanding officers and given their previous designations.

      As with almost all other Civil War units, the Fourth Mississippi Cavalry was often known and written about using alternate designations derived from the name of its commanding officer. Names of this type used by or to describe the Fourth Mississippi Cavalry are listed below:

  • ASSIGNMENTS:

      The Fourth Mississippi Cavalry spent its entire career in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana (and, as it was subsequently renamed, the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana). The list below shows the specific higher command assignments of the regiment.

      January 20, 1863 - First Brigade, Cavalry Corps, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
      January 31, 1863 - Cavalry, First Military District, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
      March 2, 1863 - First Brigade, Second Division, Cavalry Corps, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
      June 4, 1863 - First Brigade, Jackson's Cavalry Division, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
      August 9, 1863 - Adams' Brigade, Walker's Division, Yazoo City, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
      August 20, 1863 - (nine companies) Jackson's Brigade, Jackson's Division, Cavalry, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. (Company "D")
      Provost Guard, Escorts and Guards, Cavalry Division, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
      Sept. 16, 1863 - First Brigade, Jackson's Division, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
      March 10, 1864 - Adams' Brigade, Jackson's Division, Cavalry Corps, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
      June 1, 1864 - Mabry's Brigade, Adams' Division, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
      Sept. 1, 1864 - Mabry's Brigade, District North of the Homochitto, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
      Nov. 20, 1864 - Mabry's Brigade, Northern Sub-District, District of Mississippi and East Louisiana, Department of Alabama, Missis- sippi, and East Louisiana.
      Feb. 18, 1865 - Starke's Brigade, Chalmer's Division, Forrest's Cavalry Corps, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
