South Carolina 1st (Butler's) Infantry Regiment

Company B

This company was at first designated as E. It was organized by Captain J. C. Simpkins, whom Governor Pickens had appointed to the captaincy of the 5th company of the proposed regiment, March 4, 1861. The muster roll of April 30, 1861, shows that at that time it was stationed at Sullivan's Island and had been so stationed previously thereto. The following additional muster rolls of the company are available: May 17, June 30, August 31, October 31, and December 31, 1861; April 30, June 30, August 31, October 31, and December 31, 1862; February 28, April 30, June 30, August 31, October 31, and December 31, 1863; February 29, June 30, August 31, October 31, and December 31, 1864.

The company was mustered into Confederate service, as Co. B, by G. R. Jones, A. A. General, Mustering Officer, on Sullivan's Island, May 17, 1861. By the muster roll of June 30, 1861, the company's station is given as Sullivan's Island; by that of August 31, as Sullivan's Island; by that of October 31, as Camp Barnard E. Bee, Edisto Island, with this note:

"Left Sullivan's Island Charleston Harbor S. C. on the 14th day of September 1861 Arrived at Camp B. E. Bee Edisto Island S. C. on the evening of 15th of September 1861"

By the muster roll of December 31, 1861, Fort Moultrie is given as the company's station; by that of April 30, 1862, Camp Evans, Church Flats, is given with this note:

"Station changed from Camp Buist (near John's Island Ferry) to Camp Evans, Church Flats, S. C. March 2nd, 1862"

The muster roll of June 30, 1862, gives Camp Evans as the company's station with these notes:

"Marched to Johns Island on May 23rd & remained until 25th May 1862. March to the above Island the same evening & remained until the 27th May 1862."

"Marched to Johns Island June 2nd 62 & remained upon the Island until the 10th of June 1862 -- during which Time the company marched 150 miles."

The muster roll of August 31, 1862, gives Camp Evans as the company's station with these notes:

"1st Marched from Camp Evans To Adams Run July 21st 1862

"2nd March from Adams Run To Church Flats July 23rd 1862

"Distance marched Twenty miles--

"The health of this Co "B" 1st S. C. I has been bad throughout the summer; at times worse than when this muster Roll was made out, arising from exposure to the malaria incident to the low marshes of the coast of South Carolina--Almost all the cases of sickness are attributed to the above cause

Co "B" 1 S C 1" The muster roll of October 31, 1862, gives the company's station as Cove Batteries, Sullivan's Island; that of December 31, 1862, gives Battery Bee, Sullivan's Island; that of February 28, 1863, gives Beauregard Battery; that of April 31, 1863, gives the same station with this note:

"This company was engaged in the action of Charleston Harbor 7th April 1863"

The muster roll of June 30, 1863, gives Battery Marshall as the company's station, and that of August 31, gives Battery Marshall with this comment:

"Ten Men of this company was attached to Capt Haskells company [D] in an engagement on Morris Island with the enemy -- July 10th 1863."

The muster roll of October 31, 1863, shows the company still at Battery Marshall; that of December 31, the same; that of February 29, 1864, the same, and that of October 31, the same with this note:

"The Company went to Fort Sumter Sept 14th 1864 and was relieved Oct 7th 64 and came to this battery the same night"

The roll of December 31,1864, shows this company still at Battery Marshall.
