South Carolina 1st (Butler's) Infantry Regiment

Company E

Company E was mustered into Confederate service by Major David R. Jones, A. A. General, Mustering Officer, on Sullivan's Island, May 17, 1861. It had previously been designated as Company K.

The following muster rolls of the company are available: April 30, May 17, June 30, August 31, October 31, December 31, 1861; April 30, June 30, August 31, October 31, December 31, 1862; February 28, April 30, June 30, October 31, December 31, 1863; February 29, April 30, June 30, August 31, October 31, and December 31, 1864.

The muster roll of April 30, 1861, gives the company's station as the Moffit Channel Battery, with the following comments:

"Company K. 1 Regt S. C. I. was detached for Artillery service on the 23 of March 1861. at the Eufilade Battery. Sullivans Island, having taken an active part in the Bombardment of Fort Sumter, on the 12th and 13th: of April and have since been removed to the Moffit Channel Battery."

The muster roll of May 17, 1861, gives Sullivan's Island as the company's station; that for June 30, gives Moultrie House, Sullivan's Island, with these remarks:

"Company E 1 Regt S. C. Infantry Stationed at the Moffits Channel Battery has been removed to the Moultrie House, Sullivans Island Now Head Quarters. But said Co. is put in charge of aforesaid battery, when their Services Are required in Artillery."

Muster roll of August 31, 1861, gives the Moultrie House as the company's station; that for October 31, gives Camp Barnard E. Bee, Edisto Island, with the following remarks:

"Sept 14, 1861. Company E 1 Regt Inf S. C. P. A removed from Sullivans Island and arrived at Camp Barnard E. Bee Edisto Island on the 15th Septr. 1861. joined Head Qrs. 1 Regt Infantry, S. C. P. A."

The muster roll of December 31, 1861, gives Beauregard Battery as the company's station, with this note:

Left Edingsville Edisto Island Nov 19th 1861 -- and arrived at Ft. Moultrie Sullivans Isld. Nov 20th 1861 -- marched a few miles and went the remainder of the way by steamer distance of about Fifty (50) Miles. Nov 30th 1861 removed to Beauregard Batty Sulivans Isld--"

The muster roll of April 30, 1862, gives Camp Evans as the company's station, adding this note:

"March 2, 1862, Capt R. P Smith's Company "E". 1 Regt Infantry, removed from Camp Buist South Carolina to Camp Evans South Carolina, Church Flats, distance about 7 Miles."

The muster roll of June 30, 1862, gives Camp Evans as the company's station, adding the following comments:

"May 23rd. 1862. Company "E" 1 Regt. Inf ordered on duty Johns Island and returned to Camp Evans, South Carolina 27th May 1862. June 3d. 1862 Company "E" ordered on duty to the aforesaid Island to the 10th. June 1862, on Active Service Marching about 18 Miles per day."

The muster roll of August 31, 1862, gives Camp Evans as the company's station, with the following remarks:

"Company is stationed on a Plantation on Stono River in the low Country of So Ca, and has been and is suffering from Billious Re-Mittent and Inter-Mittent Fevers prevalent in this locality at this season of the year.

The muster roll of October 31, 1862, gives Fort Moultrie as the company's station, with the following comment:

"Company left Camp Evans South Carolina on 6th September 1862. And proceeded by Rail Road to Charleston South Carolina and thence to Fort Moultrie, South Carolina on the 7th September 1862. A distance of about Twenty Five Miles."

The muster roll of December 31, 1862, gives Fort Moultrie as the company's station; that of February 28, 1863, gives the same station; that of April 30, gives the same, adding the following note:

"Company 'E' was engaged in the Fight with Iron clad fleet on the 7th day of April. It Manned the right Battery on the Southern face of Fort Moultrie."

The muster roll of June 30, 1863, gives Fort Moultrie as the company's station; that of October 31, gives the Brooke Gun Battery, and comments as follows:

"Company 'E' was engaged in the defense of Morris Island for nine days at Batteries Gregg and Wagner, just before the evacuation of that post, from augt 27th to the 5 sep 1863, also in the Fights with the Iron clad fleet of the enemy, at Fort Moultrie on the 7th and 8th Sep 1863, on the 8th. sixteen men of this comp were killed and Twelve wounded by an explosion of Ammunition Chests, much of the Comp property was also destroyed. This Co. was not mustered on last Muster Day. It was on Morris Island, none of the Troops then, were mustered.

The muster roll of December 31, 1863, gives the Brooke Gun Battery as the company's station; that of February 29, 1864, gives the same station, with this comment:

"Company has been frequently engaged in Artillery Practice against the enemies works on Morris Island, the enemy returning the fire."

The muster roll of April 30, 1864, gives Battery Marion, Sullivan's Island, as the company's station, adding:

This Company has been engaged in frequent practice at the enemies works on Morris' Island; The enemy returning the fire Sometimes."

The muster roll of June 30, 1864, gives Battery Marshall as the company's station, adding the following comments:

"May 29 Company 'E' Removed from Battery Marion to Battery Bee at end of Sulls. Island June 1 Removed from Battery Bee to Fort Moultrie June 6 Removed from Fort Moultrie to Nos 2-3 & 4 Two Gun Batteries East End Sullivans Island June 16 Removed from Nos 2. 3. & 4 Two Gun Batteried E. E. Sulls Island to Battery Marshall E. E. Sullivans Island."

The muster roll of August 31, 1864, gives Battery Marshall as the company's station; that of October 31, gives the same station, with the following comment:

"Company 'E' 1 So. Ca. Inf. Reported for duty at ____ Oct 6th. 1864. and Relieved Company 'B' of the Same Regt."

The muster roll of December 31, 1864, shows the company still stationed at Battery Marshall.
