During the period 27 June 1862 - 1 April 1863, he served as a substitute for James S. Hyer in Co. A, 17th (6th)Battalion SC Cavalry (subsequently, Co.D, 5th SC Cavalry), after which date no further record of his service exists. He is last reported on a li
st of rebel deserters and refugees in the custody of the U.S. Provost Marshall at
Charleston,SC, dated 1 April 1865. Remarks on the list indicate that he was
discharged after taking the oath of allegiance.
His widow's persion application which indicates he was
detached to the Quartermasters command. Interestingly enough there are
letters in her file from the historian A.S. Salley, a US Senator from
Georgia, as well as his former Colonel.
