ORGANIZATION:
The study of Hardy’s Squadron involves tracking several units due to the fact that the squadron was affiliated with several other units at different times. Hardy’s Squadron existed as a separate entity from December 1862 - June 1863 during which time it served as escort to Major General John P. McCown.
In June, 1863, the first two companies returned to service with the TN 12th Cavalry Battalion which was also consolidated at about the same time with the TN 16th Cavalry Battalion and designated “Rucker’s Legion.” AKA the 1st East Tennessee Legion.
Company “C” aka Captain Partin’s Company was detailed as escort for Major General A. P. Stewart. About August 1, 1863, Partin's Company was assigned as Company "L" of Baxter Smith's 8th (also called 4th) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment.
