HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Confederate Ordnance Department planned on building the world's largest small arms factory in Macon, Georgia to produce Confederate Enfields. The armory building was almost finished when the war ended. With the surrender, the armory building and all the property associated with the Confederacy became captured U.S. property. The armory building stood for years, but because the roof was never finished, it quickly deteriorated and was torn down a decade or so after the war. The last of the remains of the old armory building was demolished in 2006.
For a time, the Rigdon and Ansley company made pistols in Griswoldville, just across the Ocmulgee River from the Armory building, before moving to Goldsboro, then to Augusta.
