Historical Notes HISTORICAL NOTES:
The 124th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, and mustered in September 10, 1862. It mustered out at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 28, and discharged at Chicago, Illinois, August 16, 1865.

The Regiment lost during service 1 Officer and 40 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 147 Enlisted men by disease. Total 190.

Movement on Bruinsburg and turning Grand Gulf April 25-30. Battle of Thompson's Hill, Port Gibson, May 1. North Fork Bayou Pierre May 3. Battles of Raymond, Miss., May 12. Jackson May 14. Champion's Hill May 16. Siege of Vicksburg May 18-July 4. Assaults on Vicksburg May 19 and 22 and June 25. Surrender of Vicksburg July 4. Occupation of Vicksburg until November, 1863. Stephenson's Expedition to Monroe, La., August 20-September 2, 1863. Expedition toward Canton October 14-20. Bogue Chitto Creek October 17. At Big Black November 7, 1863, to February, 1864. (Regiment won the "Excelsior Prize Banner," tendered by Gen. M.D. Leggett, Commanding the Division, to the best drilled and finest Regiment in the Division. Awarded by the unanimous vote of the committee, and presented to the Regiment by Gen. J. B. McPherson January 23, 1864, and carried by the Regiment until April 5, 1864, when, through reassignment outside the Division, it was turned over to the Division Commander,) Expedition to Sunnyside Landing, Ark., January 10-16, 1864.
