The 1st Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was originally called the 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia. It was organized in Rhode Island, April, 1861. for 3 months service. It moved to Washington, D. C., April 20 and 24, 1861.
During its service, the regiment lost a total of 25 men.
OFFICERS:
June 19, 1861 - J.S. Pitman was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment but was assigned to detached duty at Providence.
June 27, 1861 - J.P. Balch was appointed Major of the regiment.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Attached to Burnside's Brigade, Hunter's Division, McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia, June-July.
Duty at Camp Sprague, Defenses of Washington, till July 16.
Advance on Manassas, Va., July 16-21.
Battle of Bull Run July 21. Left Washington for home July 25.
Mustered out August 2, 1861.
