Beck, Mrs. Charles Sr. ( - 13 MAY 1874)
Beck, Robert C. (1827 - 22 JUL 1864)
Robert C. Beck, eldest son of Mr. Charles Beck dec'd, was buried in Columbia So. Ca. July 26, 1864. He was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness in Virginia in the month of June last, and died of his wounds a few days before his burial as above. He expired in one of the Hospitals in Virginia, and his remains were brought for interment to the city of Columbia, there to repose in the family burial place. Truly Robert C. Beck, was a most worthy and exemplary young man. Amiable, pious, and without a known vice, he was considered and esteemed by all who knew him, as a pattern for the young men of Columbia. As a son, he was all in all to his widowed mother; as a brother affectionate and kind; as a companion, sincere warm and true, and as a citizen, he was honored for his probity, his trustworthy character, his usefulness and energy. He has left a young wife (to whom he had been united but a few short months), his widow mother and family, and a host of friends, who will mourn his departure hence. oh this horrid, wretched war! How much ill has it accumulated; how many hearts has it desolated; how many fatherless little ones has it cast upon a cheerless future; how many widows has it made of once happy wives; how many true friends, has it convulsed with untold mental agony. When, when will it cease, and them emblems of Peace, once more cheer us, and give hope for the future.
