The Trek to Virginia

On 2 APR, 1862, the regiment went via train from Camp Davis to Goldsboro, NC. Draughton Haynes (Company I) states that they left Camp Davis on the 4th, but in any case, they traveled via train through Augusta, GA and up into NC to Camp Mason, near Goldsboro.

William Luke (Company F) and Burrell B. Summers (Company F) were left sick at Camp Davis. William Luke later died on 6 APR 1862 of typhoid fever. Burrell B. Summers (Company
F) died on 7 APR 1862 of dysentery.

William Luke was the first of a long line of men who died from various diseases. In addition to the typhoid fever, some of the other diseases which claimed lives were:

measles
calculus
diarrhea
dysentery
bronchitus
pneumonia

While in route to Goldsboro, Wesley Summers (Company F) deserted at Augusta, GA on 3 APR 1862. His name appears in the rosters, but with no additional details. There is a W. Summers listed in the Georgia 3rd Regiment Reserves which may be him, but he evidently did not rejoin the 49th after the
death of his two brothers.

Benjamin Watson (Company B), Jacob Purvis (Company B), and George D. Smith (Company B) were also left sick at Augusta. George later joined his unit, but was absent, sick again in August. Pension records state he was furloughed on account of rheumatism 1 OCT 1862 and was unable to return.

James Roberts (Company B) died of typhoid fever at Wilmington, NC on 9 APR 1862.

Abner Brown (Company E) died of brain fever at Wilmington, NC 10 APR 1862.

William H. Webb (Company B) was discharged on account of rheumatism at Goldsboro, NC 24 MAY 1862.

After the departure of General Anderson, the regiment was assigned to the brigade of General William Walker, wherein it remained until the health of the men was sufficiently restored to enable them to proceed to Richmond.

On 24 MAY 1862, the regiment was transported to Virginia by
railroad, with orders to report again to General Anderson; but upon the arrival of the 49th in Richmond, it was considered impracticable to join General Anderson's command, which was then stationed near Guinea's Station on the Fredericksburg railroad, and it was assigned temporarily to the brigade of General Pettigrew.

G. J. Harnage and Louis Valentine (Company H) deserted on 24 MAY 1862.

Henry B. Youngblood (Company I) was discharged for disability on 24 MAY 1862.

Jacob Purvis (Company F) died on 25 MAY 1862.

By my count the 49th suffered 31 casualties, 8 of whom were in Company F along with Thomas before they saw their first battle.
