ORGANIZATION:

The Tennessee 1st Cavalry Battalion was organized and mustered into Confederate service in September, 1861. Its members were raised in Davidson, Williamson, Cannon, Wilson, DeKalb, and Rutherford counties. With five companies and 370 men, the unit moved to Kentucky and here confronted the Federals. Later it was active in Mississippi, then was reduced to three companies and in June, 1862, merged into Barteau's 22nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment.
